Step 2

Attach the two side 1x4s to the back, with two screws into the back. If wood splits, take a second to predrill holes. Use ample glue - this is a structural joint.

Attach bottom to sides and back with glue and screws. Predrill screw holes if necessary.

Step 4

Attach front to shelf. The front is not structural - you can use 1-1/4" brad nails if you have them.

Step 5

Use jigsaw or hole saw to notch out sides. The notch does not have to be super deep - just enough to keep the bike from moving on the shelf. Hang the bike holder on the wall with 3" or longer screws into a stud in the wall with at least two screws.

Finishing

Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
