Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1
Use 1-1/4" brad nails and glue to nail together the tree base from the 1x4 boards.

Place the 1x12 on top and center.
Nail the 1x12 to the base with 1-1/4" brad nails.

Mark guide lines with a pencil from diagonal corners as shown in the diagram.
Glue the 7" long 1x2 pieces on, centered on the guide lines. Hot glue is recommended since it dries fast. Attach also with 1-1/4" brad nails when glue is dry.

Add the 1x10 shelf on top and glue and nail to the lower level of 1x2s.
For the upper levels, I used a shorter 1x2 length (6"). Repeat these steps with the 1x8 and 1x6 top.

Finishing
Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
