Step-by-step Instructions
Build the frame
Build the frame with the 2x6 boards. Attach the two outer 2x6s first, then add the two center dividers. Use 2-1/2" screws and wood glue.
Add the small shelves
Drill two 3/4" pocket holes in each end of each 30" 1x6. Secure the shelves to the dividers, leaving 12" of space underneath, with 1-1/4" pocket-hole screws and wood glue.
Attach the back boards
Attach the 8-foot 1x6 boards to the back with 2" wood screws and glue. Install the top and bottom boards first, then center and attach the middle board.
Attach the front board
Apply glue to the front edges 3-1/2" up from the bottom. Attach the 8-foot 1x4 with 2" screws. Screws are recommended because the hooks will place pulling force on this board.
Finishing
Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
