Step-by-step Instructions

1

Step 1

Lay on a flat surface and attach the legs to the armrest from the top, with two screws per joint.

Outdoor Bench — step 1
2

Measure and mark out placement of the arm supports and attach with two screws per joint.

Build two identical leg sets.

Step 3

Place the back supports and attach to JUST the top seat support - we will further attach in later steps. DO THIS IN MIRROR for the two leg sets. NOTE: We found the bench to be very sturdy as built. But if you wanted to increase the back strength, you could simply increase the length of the back support boards, so it ties in with the lower board on the arms (increase length to about 32"). This would add considerable strength to the back.

Step 4

Attach the bottom stretcher between the bottom boards. You may need an extra hand here, or you can use pocket holes, or try adding just one of the 2x6 seat boards (last step) to help stabilize as you attach.

5

Lay on back and attach the back rest boards, starting at the top and working downward.

IMPORTANT - further secure the back by adding screws into the back from the back leg.

Step 6

Layout seat boards and attach to the back supports.

Finishing

Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
