Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1
Attach legs to the 1x4s, centered on the 1x4s. I recommend using 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" pocket hole screws on the inside, but you could also countersink 2-1/2" screws from top. Use glue.

Step 2
Attach back support 6" up from bottom of legs - pocket holes on underside preferred but countersunk screws will work too. Use glue.

Step 3
Screw the desktop to the leg base - at least 4 screws per side.

Finishing
Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
