Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1
Attach 1x4s into a rectangle. Use 2" screws at joints or if the ends are hidden, you can use pocket holes placed on the outside. You can also use 1-1/4" brad nails and wood glue.

Step 2
Attach top 1x8 to the 1x4 frame. Use 1-1/4" brad nails and glue.

Step 3
Cut dowels and place in bottom of shelf. Attach with 2" screws or 1-1/4" brad nails and glue.

Step 4
Finish and hang to studs in walls with screws. Depending on wall thickness and construction you may need to adjust your hanging screws. We used 3" self tapping wood screws for our stud framed walls with 1/2" drywall.

Finishing
Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
