Step-by-step Instructions

1

Step 1

For the bunk bed, the first step is to build the end panels that are open, or "footboards". I used two 1-1/2" pocket holes with 2-1/2" pocket hole screws as shown, on each end of the slats. I built ONE of these per each bunk bed.

Step 2

Optional trim was added as shown to block in the end panels. We used wood ripped to 1-1/2" wide x 2" rip.

Step 3

Start the build of the headboard panel without the top slat as shown.

4

Add the blocking as shown.

Instead of the 4x4, we used a 2x4 piece, so we didn't have to go back and buy more 4x4 post. We attached with 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" pocket hole screws where we could, and 2-1/2" self tapping screws in other areas. Note: the 19” length differs from diagrams as 19” was the scrap cut length when we built the full size bunks. This dimension only matters if you are planning a specific opening size for a ladder. For the stairs with the top platform the wider opening worked well.

Step 5

Filling in the headboard is optional and you can use a variety of materials. We used tongue and groove pieces, layer out and nailed down. You can also use plywood.

Step 6

On final assembly, we sanded and stained everything first. Then attached the side rails to the end panels with THREE 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" pocket hole screws. We hid the pocket holes on the wall facing side so would not be visible from the front.

Step 7

After attaching the rails, we attached the inner cleats with both pocket holes into the posts, and to the rails with 2-1/2" self tapping screws. The middle cleat is not needed on the twin. For full and queen, attach so the top edge matches the top edge of the side cleats, with pocket hole screws into the end panels.

Step 8

Cut and lay slats out on top of the cleats. Screw down. You can use a shorter screw, and you only need one screw per joint. You can nail slats down (much faster and easier) but the nails could potentially poke out and damage your mattress (not likely but needs to be considered).

Finishing

Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
