Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1
Two screws, 2-3/4" length, per joint. Attach flush to the inside of the legs with a 3/4" spacing in between. Work from the top board downward.

Step 2
Attach the top flush with outside edges of the legs using 2-3/4" screws.

Step 3
Attach the front and back slats to the arms, lining up the 2x6s (and the 2x4 to bottom edge of front middle 2x6) with 2-3/4" screws.

Attach the 2x4 at the top with 2-3/4" screws.
You can also use a 2x2 (won't line up at front). It will be more comfortable but will not be as stylish.

Step 5
Screw seat cleats to the inside of the chair, at least four screws per cleat.

Step 6
Lay slats out and space evenly. Screw down with 2-3/4" screws.

Finishing
Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
