Simple Cedar Raised Garden Bed Plan (Made with Fence Pickets)

Build a durable cedar raised garden bed using just six cedar fence pickets and four 2×3 studs. This simple design creates a sturdy 39" × 75" garden bed that’s perfect for vegetables, herbs, or flowers. The project requires only basic tools and inexpensive materials, making it a great beginner build that can be completed in an afternoon for around $30–$35 in lumber. NOTE: I built cedar fence picket beds like this about 15 years ago using just fence pickets and 1x2 and they have held up for over 15 years! These are much heavier duty and should last at least as long.

Shopping List

  • 6 - 5-1/2" cedar fence pickets, not dogeared, 72" long
  • 4 - 2x3 @ 8 feet long
  • About 50 - 2-3/4" self tapping exterior screws
  • About 40 - 1-5/8" self tapping exterior screws
  • exterior oil that is safe for food gardens

NOTE: For the 2x3 boards, they should be Douglas fir/hem fir/red toned studs for the most durability and food safety. If you can't find 2x3s in this wood type, you can rip 2x6s into two boards. You can also use a yellow toned wood, but will need to oil it to increase durability over time.

Finishing

Sand all surfaces, starting with a medium grit and finishing with fine. Wipe off the dust, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler, and sand smooth once dry. Apply primer if you're painting, then finish with your choice of paint or stain and seal with a durable clear topcoat. For outdoor projects, use exterior-rated primer, paint or stain, and sealer so the piece stands up to the weather.
